Russia against unilateral Iran sanctions
Press TV – June 16, 2010
A senior Russian parliament official has expressed opposition to unilateral sanctions against Iran after EU members made a decision to unilaterally impose additional embargoes on Tehran.
Chairman of the Russian Federation Council Sergei Mironov told the weekly Novy Vzglyad that Russia is opposed to unilateral sanctions against Iran and those firms and countries working in collaboration with the country, IRNA reported.
The Russian official said such measures fall outside the framework of the UN Security Council (UNSC) resolutions against Iran.
The opposition comes as Moscow — Iran’s longtime energy and trade partner — voted in favor of a US-drafted UNSC resolution for a fourth set of sanctions against Iran over its nuclear activities.
Mironov’s comments followed that of Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in which he warned the US and EU against imposing unilateral sanctions on Iran.
In a recent telephone conversation with US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, the Russian minister “expressed concern over coming reports about the intentions of the US and the European Union to go beyond a collective Security Council position on Iran and to impose unilateral sanctions.”
The decision by the US and EU for the imposition of new sanctions on Iran comes as Tehran rejects Western accusations of seeking to develop nuclear weapons, arguing that the International Atomic Energy Agency in numerous reports has confirmed the non-diversion of nuclear material in the country.
