Israel’s Iron Dome grossly over-hyped: scientists

Al-Akhbar | March 9, 2013

Israel’s much touted Iron Dome missile defense system has been grossly over-hyped, a team of renowned scientists have found.

The Iron Dome’s success rate of 84 percent, as reported by the Israeli military, may be as low as 5 percent, according to international expert in military defense Theodore Postol. He previously argued that the joint American-Israeli Patriot missile defense system was ineffective against Iraqi Scud missiles in the second Gulf War.

Postol and two other scientists, who have worked for billion dollar defense companies Raytheon and Rafael, reviewed video footage of the Iron Dome’s performance and concluded that images said to show rocket interception were actually the Dome’s missiles self-destructing.

During Israel’s vicious assault on Gaza last November, 3,200 civilian damage reports were filed due to retaliatory rocket fired from the coastal strip, although the Israeli military reported that only 58 missiles failed to be intercepted by the Dome. Scientists said this was ‘impossible’.

The United States is currently providing funding for an additional eight Iron Dome units. $205 million has been authorized by Congress for the project.

  1. Funny that… In an article from November 26, 2012 by David Talbot (MIT Technology Review’s chief correspondent) Theodore (Ted) Postol is quoted as stating the following:

“It appeared to work very well—a lot better even than the people involved in building it expected. It’s an astonishing achievement—I think it’s even fair to use the word miraculous—to be able to hit these rockets with the reliability they demonstrated.”

    • And those who claim miracles are always the ones that over time prove to have been correct. Very convincing.

      • You’re ignoring that the fact remains that the same “expert” supposedly said contrarian things in the time span of months…

Or, possibly, you didn’t even notice it…

  2. The US claims to be broke and is cutting back on social programs for its “47%” who live below the poverty lines but it can find money for military protection for how many Jews? I guess it’s just a matter of pulling this money out of a hat. That’s nothing new to US bankers who simply print money to facilitate wars and hope to gain real wealth by stealing the resources of the pilloried nation.

    • The poverty line is a purely statical measure… It will always exist… Even if the “poor” are rich by any standard…

As for the American poor, they are richer by far then many of the worlds real poor…

As for aid to Israel, the total aid to Israel (much of whitch needs to be expended in the US – i.e. one could consider it a subsidy to US industry) is but a very small drop in the ocean that is US expenditure…
