Turkey is Media’s Latest Target for Alleged ‘Terror’ Ties

06/10/2010 by Alex Kane

The Israeli raid on the Gaza flotilla that resulted in the deaths of eight Turkish citizens and one Turkish-American has led Israel and its supporters to argue that the Turkish government and a prominent Turkish humanitarian organization are “terrorist” sympathizers with ill intentions toward Israel and the United States. In a series of articles, the U.S. corporate press has joined in.

Yesterday, the Washington Post reported that IHH, the Turkish aid group involved with the flotilla that attempted to break Israel’s blockade of Gaza, has a “dual message of aid and confrontation.” Their evidence for the confrontational attitude of IHH? A banner on the side of their building that reads, “Israel, murderers, hands off our boats!” Don’t pay attention to the fact that IHH was attempting to deliver humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, and that it was Israel that confronted and killed people on the ship.

The Post goes on to report claims that IHH has links to Al-Qaeda, citing a 2006 report by “U.S. terrorism investigator” Evan Kohlmann. But two paragraphs down, the Post quotes a “think tank with ties to Israel’s Defense Ministry, the Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center,” that states there is “no known evidence of current links between IHH and ‘global jihad elements.'”

What’s not mentioned in the Post article is that no government besides Israel considers IHH a terrorist organization. In fact, IHH delivered humanitarian aid to Haiti in the aftermath of the January earthquake at a time when the United States military took a leading role in directing relief efforts there. Would the U.S. have allowed a terrorist organization into Haiti? IHH has also helped out in New Orleans.

Marsha B. Cohen, an expert on U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East, has already debunked IHH’s “terror ties” here at Mondoweiss and cast doubt on the credentials of Evan Kohlmann, pointing to a Spinwatch.org article on Kohlmann that thoroughly details his lack of expertise. Andy Worthington, author of The Guantanamo Files, noted that Kohlmann assisted in the prosecution of Osama bin Laden’s former driver by producing a film that was “pure propaganda,” raking in $45,000 for the film and his testimony as an “expert witness” in the much criticized trial.

But be scared! According to the Post:

In the group’s two-story headquarters, IHH members — mostly men in their 30s and 40s dressed in jeans or casual business attire — oversee operations in dozens of countries. The group provides humanitarian aid such as freshwater wells and medical care, as well as Islamic services such as training for prayer leaders. A world map on one wall depicted Palestine, but not Israel.

  2. There is a lawlessness that is sweeping the U.S., from BP being in charge of the spill cleanup, to Obama not acting on the military execution and kidnap of Americans from the flotilla, and “cops” gone wild. Our unconfidently elected leaders, bought and sold, as Henry says, are using their positions to benefit their corrupt buddies destroying the constitution in the process. It won’t be long before U.S. citizens are forced into an unforgiving fight with the mendacious officeholders as they are clearly not leaders, and clearly uncaring and clearly dangerous.

  3. Do you dispute the main flotilla organiser – IHH – has ties to the Union of Good, and thereby Muslim Brotherhood and HAMAS?

Do you deny the ideological contribution made to both HAMAS and Al Qaida by the Muslim Brotherhood?

Do you dispute the rise of Muslim Brotherhood and its attendant extremist Islamism was closely entwined with Nazism? (Hence their similarity)

    You dispute all this?

    • king,

      Perhaps you can enlighten us.

      Where is “Al Qaida” headquartered?

Is the Red Cross also a sponsor of Hamas?

Is the Jewish extremist movement known as Zionism closely entwined with Nazism?

Please answer to the best of your ability.

      • Well, hold on? You’ve not addressed the main point, at all.

you have not disputed what I said.

So do you accept them as true? Or not?

We can get to the implications of these relationships only after you have accepted them. Do you accept them or not?

        • Of course I don’t accept your nonsensical hasbara.

That’s just outrageous that you go on public forums and try to excuse war crimes.

Perhaps we should find rationales for other criminal acts while we are at it, eh?

          • The Union of Good (UG) (Arabic: ائتلاف خير‎, Itilaf al-Khayr), also known as the Charity Coalition, is an umbrella organization consisting of over 50 Islamic charities and funds which funnel money to organizations belonging to Hamas, which currently rules the territory of the Gaza Strip.

  4. Do you accept what I stated earlier, or not?

Clearly you understand that accepting what I said has implications for your denials of IHH’s connections with “terrorism” – HAMAS, Al Qaida, Muslim Brotherhood, Union of Good.

Are you going to deny what I said? If not, then there isn’t anything to your attempt to pretend the flotilla was totally separate from “terrorism”.

If you accept what I earlier said – you accept the ties to terrorism.

So do you deny what I said, or not?

  5. In 2008 Israel banned IHH from the country because of the organization’s membership in the “Union of Good” (UOG), a Hamas-founded umbrella coalition comprised of more than 50 Islamic charities (most of which are associated with the global Muslim Brotherhood) that channel money and goods to Hamas-affiliated institutions. In December 2008, the U.S. government designated UOG as a terrorist entity that was guilty of “diverting” donations that were intended for “social welfare and other charitable services,” and using those funds “to strengthen Hamas’ political and military position.”

    • What stupidity are you presenting???

Everybody knows that Israel is a criminal terror organization and Hamas is the only democratically elected body in Palestine.

Why don’t you get off of the stolen land you squat on?

  6. The Union of the Good is chaired by Yusuf Al-Qaradawi, an islamist cleric close to the Muslim Brotherhood. Initially he founded a “Campaign of 101 Days” in October 2000, immediately after the outbreak of the Al-Aqsa Intifada, with the involvement of the Hamas leadership

The Society of the Muslim Brothers, often simply الإخوان al-ikhwān, the Brotherhood or MB) is a Sunni transnational movement and the largest political opposition organization in many Arab states.[1] The world’s oldest and largest Islamic political group,[1] it was founded in 1928, in Egypt by the schoolteacher Hassan al-Banna.

Hassan al-Banna actively cooperated with the Nazis in undermining the Western Alliance, as a first step on his agenda towards global jihad, and widely disseminated in Arabic versions the standard Nazi texts of Mein Kampf and The Protocols of the Elders of Zion.[9]

Hamas grew out of the Muslim Brotherhood…….Yassin founded Hamas as the Muslim Brotherhood’s local political arm in December 1987, following the eruption of the first intifada, a Palestinian uprising against Israeli control of the West Bank and Gaza. Hamas published its official charter in 1988

I am ignoring your efforts at trying to change the subject. I’d just like to know why you refuse to these facts. These facts appear to directly invalidate your claims, yet you don’t dispute them.

You haven’t disputed any of it. Except its relevance- when its relevance is perfectly clear. If you don’t dispute these facts then you are actually admitting the claims you made in your blog are wrong.

  8. So you won’t challenge those facts, but you are sticking to your story, which is contradicted by these facts which you refuse to dispute.

Somehow recognising the import of these facts seems far less important to you than denying them.

So, clearly, your position is neither “fair” nor “balanced”. It’s also plain wrong.

But you don’t care and nothing has changed. You’ll continue AS IF these facts didn’t exist…..

    • “king”,

      Your premise is flawed.

As has already been pointed out, Hamas is the legitimate government, Israel is a criminal terror gang.

      • Your headline claims: “Turkey is Media’s Latest Target for Alleged ‘Terror’ Ties”

You can only sustain this by holding to the bald assertion that ties to HAMAS are not “‘Terror’ Ties”. Nor are myriad connections to the same milieu that spawned Al Qaeda.

Don’t you think you might be being just a teeny weeeny bit naive?

Not to say crudely and viciously binary in your attitude.
        the Protocols? Sheesh.

So HAMAS are” legitimate government”…..but Israel “is a criminal terror gang”?

The European Union, Israel, Japan, Canada, and the United States classify Hamas as a terrorist organization.

Hamas’s 1988 charter calls for replacing the State of Israel with a Palestinian Islamic state in the area that is now Israel, the West Bank, and the Gaza Strip

        Who finances Hamas?

It’s a difficult question. Hamas is believed to receive funding from Palestinian expatriates, the Iranian government, and private donors in Saudi Arabia and other Arab states.

Charities in the United States, Canada and Western Europe have funded Hamas-linked social service groups. In addition, several individuals in the United States have been charged with providing material support to the organization.

        ———-

None of which counts for much alongside the heft of your fabulous Protocols, I suspect. lol
