Germany Commits $1.4 Billion to Ukrainian War Effort

By Kyle Anzalone | The Libertarian Institute | November 21, 2023

Berlin has pledged to send Kiev $1.4 billion in weapons to aid its war against Russia. The announcement of the German arms package comes as the White House is nearing depleting the funds allocated by Congress for Ukraine.

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius rolled out the arms package on Tuesday in Kiev. Pistorius’s trip to Ukraine followed US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin’s visit to Kiev on Monday. Austin committed an additional $100 million in military aid to Ukraine.

According to Berlin, the German security assistance includes air defense interceptors, anti-tank mines, and artillery shells. “Altogether it is a package worth €1.3 billion, and I am quite sure this will help you and your fight against Russian aggression. We stand with Ukraine reliably,” Pistorius said. “We are talking about 20,000 additional shells.”

Artillery shells have been one of the highest-demand weapons for Ukraine since the start of the war. Washington has sent over 2 million 155 MM rounds since Russia invaded Ukraine last year. However, the White House’s ability to continue to arm Kiev may be waning. American weapons stockpiles have been nearing redline levels, and the Biden administration has nearly depleted the funds allocated by Congress to fight a proxy war against Russia in Ukraine.

Ukrainian forces have been firing 155 MM shells faster than the West can produce them. Kiev’s soldiers are currently firing about 240,000 rounds per month, a rate that far outpaces what the US and its Western allies can produce.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky explained Kiev’s stockpiles are dwindling. “Our supplies have decreased. It is life—and it is normal, as everyone is fighting for survival,” he said. Over the past six weeks, Israel has begun receiving shipments of 155 MM shells, adding pressure to the strained supply.

To make up for the shrinking stockpiles, the White House has sent cluster variants of artillery weapons to Kiev and Tel Aviv. The shipment violates US law. International treaties have banned cluster bombs because they continue killing civilians for years after the conflicts end.

In both the old and new Nakba, the forced expulsion of Palestinians must be rejected

By Ramzy Baroud | MEMO | November 21, 2023

It is simply inaccurate to claim that the ongoing Israeli attempt to displace all, or as many as possible, Palestinian refugees from Gaza to Sinai is a new idea, compelled solely by recent events. Displacing Palestinians — or their “transfer”, as it is known in Israeli political circles — is an old idea, as old as Israel itself.

In fact, historically, population “transfer” has been more than an idea; it’s government policy, with clear mechanisms for carrying it out. Yosef Weitz, director of the Land and Afforestation Department, was entrusted with setting up the Transfer Committee in May 1948 to oversee the expulsion of Palestinian Arabs from their towns and villages. In other words, while Israel was concluding the initial phase of its ethnic cleansing of Palestine, it initiated another phase, that of “transfer”, the results of which are well-known.

Many of Israel’s so-called liberal intellectuals have promoted the concept, either proactively or in hindsight, and continue to do so. “I don’t think that the expulsions of 1948 were war crimes,” Israeli historian Benny Morris told Haaretz in 2004. “I think he [Israel’s founding father, David Ben-Gurion] made a serious historical mistake in 1948… If he was already engaged in expulsion, maybe he should have done a complete job… You can’t make an omelette without breaking eggs. You have to dirty your hands.”

Morris was referring specifically to the Nakba, which began in earnest in December 1947, and did not conclude until 1949. After that, ethnic cleansing took on a different form; a slower campaign aimed at rejigging the demographic map of the newly-founded state in favour of Israeli Jews at the expense of Palestinian Arabs.

Several campaigns targeting Palestinian Arab communities, those which remained in Israel after the Nakba, were initiated under various guises. Although not a single community had survived the demographic onslaught by the Israeli government intact, Palestinian Bedouins faced the lion’s share of displacement. It’s a campaign that continues to this day.

After the war of June 1967, mass expulsion was again the order of the day. Approximately 430,000 Palestinians were forcibly displaced, especially from areas originally occupied in 1948. Over the years, up to the present, hundreds of thousands of Israeli Jewish settlers have taken the place of the displaced Palestinians, claiming their land, homes and orchards as their own.

In fact, the slow ethnic cleansing of the West Bank is considered to be the epicentre of Israel’s ongoing colonialism in Occupied Palestine. From an international law perspective, it is one of its greatest war crimes, as it represents a stark violation of international norms, especially the Fourth Geneva Convention: “The Occupying Power shall not deport or transfer parts of its own civilian population into the territory it occupies,” states Article 49 of the convention. It also prohibits the “individual or mass forcible transfers, as well as deportations of protected persons from occupied territory.”

To claim that the recent call for the mass expulsion of Palestinians from Gaza is a new phenomenon compelled by the violence on 7 October, and the subsequent genocide in Gaza, is therefore both inaccurate and dishonest. Such a claim ignores the fact that Israel, as a settler-colonial project, was founded on the concept of ethnic cleansing, and that Israeli politicians have never stopped talking about the mass displacement — “transfer” — of Palestinians, even under supposedly “normal” circumstances.

For example, the then Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman tried in 2014 to rebrand the old “transfer” strategy, using not-so-clever new language. “When I talk about land and population exchange, I mean the Little Triangle and Wadi Ara,” explained Lieberman, referring to the predominantly Arab regions in central and northern Israel. He insisted that, “This is not a transfer.”

This context is critical if we wish to truly understand the story behind the enthusiastic return to the language of ethnic cleansing by Israel and its allies.

Furthermore, on 11 November, Israel’s Minister for Agriculture and former head of the Shin Bet domestic spy agency, Avi Dichter, called specifically for another Nakba. “We are now rolling out the Gaza Nakba,” he said during a TV interview.

The following information can be deduced from Dichter’s statement: Israelis are very familiar with the term “Nakba”, and they know exactly what happened to the people of Palestine 75 years ago — ethnic cleansing and genocide — and remain unrepentant.

Dichter’s words were not said in anger, or in the heat of the moment. A leaked government report dated 13 October, six days into the war, suggested the mass transfer of the Palestinians in Gaza to the Sinai desert. Four days later, the Misgav Institute for National Security and Zionist Strategy think tank published a paper calling on the Israeli government to take advantage of this “unique and rare opportunity to evacuate [sic] the whole Gaza Strip.”

It makes little sense to assume that such extensive reports were conjured up within a matter of days. It takes years of planning and discussions for such complex schemes to be prepared and made worthy of official consideration.

This is not the only evidence that the forced displacement of Palestinians in Gaza was not an urgent strategy propelled by recent events; Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, who were not involved in the 7 October operation, have also found themselves under the threat of expulsion. This prompted Jordanian Prime Minister Bisher Khasawneh to state on 7 November that Amman considers any attempt to displace Palestinians to be a “red line”; in fact, a “declaration of war”.

Although Arab and international pressure has, thus far, failed to slow down the Israeli killing machine in Gaza, Arab countries have spoken out firmly against any Israeli attempt to displace Palestinians.

For now, the majority of Gaza’s 2.3 million inhabitants, most of whom are refugees from historic Palestine, are internally displaced within that tiny piece of land, denied water, food and electricity; in fact, denied life itself. Nevertheless, they remain steadfast and will not allow another Nakba to take place, no matter what the cost.

The “Gaza Nakba” must be rejected, not only by words, but also through solid Arab and international action to prevent Israel from taking advantage of the war to expel Palestinians from their homeland again. Such action must also include steps to hold Israel to account for its war crimes past, present and ongoing, starting with the original 1948 Nakba.

Spanish minister removed after urging end to Israel’s ‘genocide’ in Gaza

Press TV – November 21, 2023

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has removed Ione Belarra, minister for social rights from the Cabinet, after she harshly criticized the West’s “deafening silence” on Israel’s war crimes in the Gaza Strip.

Sánchez, who was reelected last week to lead the country, unveiled the new Cabinet for his progressive coalition government on Monday. He substituted Belarra with Pablo Bustinduy.

Through her social media pages, Belarra has unequivocally called for an end to Israel’s horrendous war crimes in the besieged coastal strip and sought the intervention of the International Criminal Court (ICC).

In the latest post on X she said the ICC has “finally opened an investigation into war crimes in Gaza,” hoping that the body “acts quickly and decisively” to end the Gaza genocide.

In an interview with Al Jazeera, she criticized “a deafening silence of so many countries and so many political leaders who could do something,” to end the war on Gaza.

“I speak about what I know well, which is the European Union. It seems the display of hypocrisy which the European Commission is showing is unacceptable.”

She also reiterated that the regime of Israel was committing “planned genocide against the Palestine people.”

“Why can we give lessons in human rights in other conflicts and not here when the world is watching in horror? “The deaths of thousands of children, the mothers desperately shouting because they are witnessing the killing of their children.”

Belarra called on Madrid and other EU countries to break diplomatic ties with Tel Aviv since the regime launched its relentless air and ground attacks against the besieged Palestinian territory, which have killed more than 13,300 people, including over 5,500 children, in six weeks.

The European Union and the United States have so far failed to publically denounce the regime’s grave violations against Palestinians.

Spain is one of the EU member states where public support for the Palestinian cause is overwhelming, according to a recent survey conducted by YouGov, a market research and public opinion company.

Never Again… Except When WE Do It

When atrocities are normalized, only normal people will commit atrocities (part I of a series)

When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time – Maya Angelou

BY HELEN OF DESTROY | NOVEMBER 21, 2023

No one could ever accuse the Israeli government of Benjamin Netanyahu of being underachievers. They have managed to kill nearly 12,000 Palestinians in Gaza in just over a month, almost all civilians, without facing a single meaningful consequence. In addition to more than 4,000 children, the casualties include dozens of medics, journalists, aid workers, and other individuals theoretically extended additional protection under international law. Hundreds of hospitals and clinics, schools, and other civilian sites have been targeted – hell, they’re even blowing up ambulances carrying people they’ve already blown up to hospitals they’re about to blow up. It’s the first genocide to be carried out in the open, full view of the world, Israel’s efforts to sever internet and telephone connections with Gaza notwithstanding.

But Israel hasn’t just deleted one in every 200 Gazans off the face of the earth — they’ve done so claiming to be acting in self-defense, an outrageous claim still echoed by 98% of the western media despite video after video showing the aftermath of IDF airstrikes on densely-populated refugee camps and hospitals overflowing with displaced families. It doesn’t take skill, ingenuity or talent to massacre a population who literally can’t escape the killing fields, but Israel continues to dupe much of the western public into believing the grinning executioners standing over the expiring corpse of Gaza holding bloody axes and waxing poetic about their deeds are in fact the victims.

Only after a month of this carnage are Americans and their western peers even starting to wake up to the fact that our “greatest ally” in the Middle East is the geopolitical equivalent of Jeffrey Dahmer gnawing on a fresh femur on live television. Even then, as major media organizations reluctantly begin to acknowledge the atrocities unfolding before their eyes, the cracks in their code of silence are only developing because Israel got greedy and started threatening those organizations’ own journalists with execution for being insufficiently harsh in their condemnation of its victims.

It’s not like the media didn’t prostrate itself before Tel Aviv’s demands as usual when the war began. MSNBC mysteriously took its three Muslim anchors off the air following the Hamas incursion. Major news outlets reprinted the most ludicrous unsourced atrocity propaganda as fact, from the “40 beheaded babies” fairytale (so bogus even the IDF would not stand by it) to Hamas “rape manuals” and dog-eared copies of “Mein Kampf” found in “terrorist” hideouts, all while glossing over the suffering being inflicted by the Most Moral Army in the World™. But it wasn’t enough to simply keep a straight face and refrain from challenging howlers like the IDF’s claim that the days of the week were actually the names of terrorists. As casualty counts mounted and news outlets printed the expected complaints by the UN, human rights groups, and anyone with a pulse that the IDF might be killing too many civilians, hasbara operations like the hilariously-named Honest Reporting began accusing the freelance photojournalists who’d been providing art for pieces on Hamas and Palestine of having known about the militants’ plans ahead of time, even while admitting they had no proof. War cabinet minister Benny Gantz seized on the imaginary threat, warning that any journalist who had advance knowledge of Hamas’ attack would be treated as a terrorist – i.e., killed – while former Israeli UN ambassador Danny Danon promised to add offending freelancers to the “eliminate” list Tel Aviv had been keeping since the raid – no empty threat given Israel’s aversion to due process. Republican US Senator Tom Cotton even called on the Justice Department to investigate the news outlets who had dared hire these swarthy strangers to document The Enemy. Never mind that the Israeli government itself almost certainly knew about the attack beforehand (as did the US), or that Israeli troops readily admitted they gunned down their countrymen and torched their houses and cars so badly they couldn’t tell the difference between Israeli and Palestinian dead before circulating photos of the resulting carnage as Hamas’ doing. Reporters are the real threat. What are you, some kind of a Holocaust 2.0-denier?

These news outlets had remained silent while Israeli bombs killed at least 42 journalists and destroyed over 50 media institutions in the wake of Tel Aviv’s declaration of war, looked the other way while Israeli authorities raided, arrested, assaulted, and threatened dozens more journalists, and sat on their hands when Israel passed a law prohibiting the publication of information favorable to the enemy. Even then, CNN bit its tongue, severing ties with the freelancer who’d been accused of palling around with terrorists despite admitting they had no issues with his reporting. But accusing the New York Times of terrorism after years of tying itself in logical pretzels to absolve Netanyahu’s government of an encyclopedia of war crimes was apparently a bridge too far. The Times posted a statement not only defending the freelance photojournalist who’d been smeared but warning that the hasbara brigade’s malignant fantasies threatened press freedom.

Israel had violated the unspoken agreement it has long held with the western media establishment, in which big international outlets cover for Israeli atrocities and are in return spared the indignities visited upon their less-cooperative Arabic colleagues. For decades, American and European journalists have cringed away from this third-rail topic under subtle but unrelenting pressure from the Israeli lobby (first detailed at length in Mearsheimer and Walt’s seminal 2007 book The Israel Lobby and US Foreign Policy), fearful of the political and personal repercussions of speaking up for Palestine in countries politically controlled by various shades of Zionism. But while media outlets might have interpreted this as an ideological ceasefire, Israel was taking advantage of the near-total absence of public scrutiny to expand its behind-the-scenes influence, a project that has advanced alarmingly even since its exposure in the 2018 al-Jazeera documentary The Lobby with the help of privatization. Infiltrating the medical freedom movement and the uprising against “cancel culture” – never mind Israel’s hatred for the former and reliance on the latter – has allowed them to neuter even much of the alternative media, meaning the genocide unfolding over the last month has been met with an eerie silence from corners one might expect to resound with outrage.

Taking Pride in Genocide

In theory, at least, Israel has made journalists’ job covering its latest war extremely easy. Netanyahu’s government is anything but shy about what it’s doing in Gaza. One “leak” after another trumpets their plans to systematically eradicate the Palestinian inhabitants of the territory — a “Gaza Nakba” in the words of agriculture minister Avi Dichter — and ship them off to tent cities in the Egyptian desert in order to snatch up that sweet beachfront real estate to carve out a profitable competitor to the Suez Canal, do a little offshore drilling, maybe build some casinos, or just plop some more aesthetically- (and morally-) revolting settlements on the land, depending on who you ask. Add in the possibility of completing the ongoing falsification of their ancestral claim to the Holy Land and seal the whole package with the blood sacrifice of a few thousand children and one can see why they might be a bit excited about it all. Indeed, Israel doesn’t just have one convenient mandate from heaven that can be stretched to justify wiping out anyone they designate as an enemy (Amalek) — they seem to print more every day. The Dahiya doctrine “justifies” flattening entire neighborhoods on suspicion a rocket has been fired from the vicinity; the Hannibal directive “allows” the killing of Israeli soldiers taken captive so they cannot be used as bargaining chips by the enemy. Zionist Jewish media outlets bristle with op-eds like this one, which rejoices in the “Dresdening of Gaza” because the writer was apparently bullied for his religion as a child. The Samson option even lays out a rationale for preemptive nuclear war.

But rather than listen to Israeli leaders when they announce what they are, the western media establishment masochistically picks through the tortured narratives tossed their way by Netanyahu’s cabinet. While Israeli media dredged up the Hannibal directive to explain the shocking IDF slaughter of Israeli civilians at the Nova rave and surrounding kibbutzes on October 7, deaths initially pinned on Hamas and only officially acknowledged as friendly fire last week, US media has continued to deny it happened at all, clinging to the original narrative that had Hamas swooping in on paragliders to lay waste to the helpless kibbutzim with firepower they did not possess. It is never explained how Palestinians with aging Kalashnikovs were supposed to have flattened entire houses, left rows of cars charred and melted, and otherwise enacted a convincing imitation of a bombardment by Israeli Hellfire missiles, but it never had to be — controlling the media establishment means never having to admit you started World War III.

Haaretz wants you to think Hamas did this with guns

If anything, Western media is far more pro-Israel than Israeli media. They’ll cover for Tel Aviv when one of Netanyahu’s minions accidentally admits to bombing yet another Gaza hospital, and they’ll jump at the chance to memory-hole Israeli politicians’ excitement over replicating the Allies’ World War II firebombing of Dresden — a state-sanctioned act of terrorism that essentially vaporized hundreds of thousands of German civilians and one of the country’s prized cultural centers in the hope that Berlin would surrender. They’ll sit with a straight face while Israeli President Isaac Herzog not only claims Hamas fighters carry Hitler’s magnum opus with them into battle (or at least into their camps, located in children’s bedrooms) but that Israel is only trying to help the Palestinians. To cover Israel as an establishment news anchor in the US is an exercise in extreme humiliation, a ritual of publicly renouncing common sense and the evidence of one’s own eyes and ears as antisemitic while uncritically gulping down the garbled narratives of guys who pronounce “terror” as “tewwow.” The publication of the Likud party’s “secret” plan to ethnically cleanse Gaza by (among other things) enlisting the US to pressure Egypt to take all the Palestinians as refugees or watch as they’re slaughtered by the IDF can hardly even be called a “leak,” having allegedly been disseminated by a member of the party in order to see whether “the public in Israel is ready to accept ideas of a transfer from Gaza.” Yet US outlets, when they did acknowledge the plan, treated its goals as the logical endpoint of the war, rather than a cynical effort to pass off genocide as humanitarianism.

If you have to ask, you’re probably Amalek

Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s country

There is no reason to believe that Israel will stop the killing once it has extirpated “Hamas.” If permitted to complete its ethnic cleansing of Gaza and the West Bank, it will send the IDF into Lebanon (as Netanyahu, haunted by Israel’s 2006 defeat, has repeatedly threatened to do). If it finds itself in military trouble, Israel will simply summon its star-spangled Golem from Washington — perhaps by sinking one of the aircraft carriers the Pentagon sent over for moral support and pinning the strike on Iran in a double-barreled homage to “Remember the Maine” and the USS Liberty. A generation of American soldiers (assuming there are any Americans who aren’t too fat, crazy, or high to serve in the military) will be deployed to enforce the colonialist whims of a regime that at best considers them cattle, even as their countrymen starve back home. And if the US somehow emerges victorious despite having squandered its weapons stocks, finances and international credibility making the world safe for ethnic nepotism in previous wars? Political dissidents — those with the basic human decency to publicly oppose the atrocities their government commits in their name — are already on the chopping block (detailed in Part II of this article), and it will be American cops, trained by Israel in the fine art of placing boot on neck, who will be rounding them up.

Netanyahu has never been shy about his disdain for the US and its inhabitants, whom he considers gullible and stupid, an attitude shared by many in Israel. In an interview earlier this month with Fox News’ Sean Hannity, who bent over backwards trying to out-hawk the Israeli with pleas to go after Hezbollah and Iran too, Netanyahu warned that if “every civilized country” did not rush to Israel’s aid in crushing Palestine, they would all fall to “Hamas barbarism.” Name-checking all the worst unproven propaganda excesses of the war, from beheaded and burnt babies to gang rapes and “mutilations,” he proceeded to literally threaten the audience, declaring through an irrepressible smirk, “If we don’t win now, then Europe is next and you’re next. And we have to win.” That’s an awful nice country you got there, goy. Sure would be a shame if anything happened— oh wait.

Say it ain’t so, Bibi!

Why should Israel be coy about its intentions, in Palestine or in the West? Decades of UN resolutions and the increasingly strident condemnations of human rights NGOs have not stopped the transformation of the West Bank into an apartheid state or Gaza into a concentration camp, nor have they brought weapons inspectors to have a look at the hundreds of nuclear warheads Israel pretends not to have as it stomps around the Middle East wailing in feigned agony while poking its neighbors in the eye. Every major human rights group on Earth has been shouting about Israel’s crimes for years, rising in volume now that Tel Aviv is putting its genocidal rhetoric into action on an unprecedented scale. But even the most sincere among these have stopped at talk, looking on in horror as Israel massacres entire families, flattens their villages, cuts the survivors off from contact with the outside world so that the extent of their annihilation can be hidden, and then runs crying to Big Daddy ‘Murica complaining there’s antisemitism blossoming on every street corner.

Without action, even the most eloquent screaming can’t stop an international criminal cartel hiding behind a national government hiding behind a religion so thickly insulated from the consequences of its actions by US bombs that it simply does not have to care what the geopolitical neighbors think. Abandoned by erstwhile protectors and allies alike, Palestinians have no choice but to take up arms against this most dire of existential threats, and those in the West who take comfort in the annihilation of Gaza, believing genocide to be some kind of zero-sum game in which someone has to get wiped off the face of the earth so better them than us, are in for a very rude awakening. In the eyes of Big Parasite, we are all Palestinians, and have been for quite some time.

Russia: Lavrov hosts ministers from Arab, Muslim countries to discuss war on Gaza

MEMO | November 21, 2023

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov is holding talks today in Moscow with his counterparts from Arab and Muslim-majority countries to discuss Israel’s genocidal war on the Gaza Strip.

Yesterday, spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, announced that “A meeting of Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov with delegations from foreign ministries of a number of Arab League and OIC countries is scheduled to be held tomorrow in Moscow.”

“They will arrive in the Russian capital city in line with the decision made at the Riyadh summit to discuss the situation around the Gaza Strip,” she said.

The meeting of members of the Ministerial Committee formed out of the Arab-Islamic Summit consists of Jordan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Ayman Safadi, the foreign ministers of Egypt, Palestine and Indonesia and Secretary-General of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation Hussein Ibrahim Taha.

Al Arabiya reports that Russia which has previously maintained close ties with the occupation state, has assumed “a cautiously pro-Palestinian position since the outbreak of war around Gaza, rebuking Israel for civilian casualties, and restating its long-standing support for a Palestinian state.”

Yesterday the delegation along with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal Bin Farhan held similar meetings in Beijing with China’s top diplomat Wang Yi where they called for an urgent ceasefire.

“The international community must act urgently, taking effective measures to prevent this tragedy from spreading. China firmly stands with justice and fairness in this conflict,” Wang told the visiting ministers in opening remarks ahead of talks.

Saudi’s Prince Faisal said:

The message is clear: the war must stop immediately, we must move to a ceasefire immediately, and relief materials and aid must enter immediately.

As of this month, China assumed the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council. In addition to meetings in Beijing and Moscow, the joint Arab-OIC delegation is looking to meet with officials representing the other three permanent members of the UN Security Council. It is hoped that they can exert pressure on Western states to reject Israel’s justification of “self-defence” for its genocidal actions against Palestinians.

Financing for Israel’s tech sector takes nosedive

The Cradle | NOvember 21, 2023

Israel’s venture capital (VC) sector has recorded a sharp slowdown since the start of the war between Tel Aviv and Palestinian resistance factions in Gaza.

This sudden slowdown has proven to be a brutal bump in the road for Israel’s tech industry, one of the country’s most important economic sectors, alongside manufacturing and diamond polishing and cutting.

In October, $325 million in funding across 120 deals was invested in Israel’s VC sector. This is a steep drop against the $1 billion in funding across 232 deals just one month prior in September, according to Tel-Aviv-based IVC Research Center.

The drop in VC funding raised anxiety among Israel’s financial elite, as a group of venture capitalists started up a fund to help the crippled tech sector named Iron Nation, which 150 companies have already joined.

“The tech economy is critical to our nation, and we encourage more to join us through investment, donation, or contribution,” said Gil Friedlander, co-founder of the project.

Chemi Peres, the son of former Israeli prime minister and president Shimon Peres, is also a part of the fund. “Some start-up companies that were about to close an investment, they were about to close a deal, everything seemed fine. And then the war broke out,” Shimon Peres said, adding that investors are still around, waiting to see what happens.
“Clearly, there has been some slowdown in new investments being closed since the war. Some slowdowns — but not a total slowdown by any stretch,” Alan Feld, founder of Vintage Investment partners, has said.

Israel’s economy has taken a severe hit since the start of the Al-Aqsa Flood operation, with economists saying that the war has thrown the country into a recession.

No previous war that Israel has fought has affected the Israeli economy in the same way.

The Cradle columnist Kit Klarenberg wrote regarding the successes of Al-Aqsa Flood, “Tel Aviv’s settler-colonial economy, reliant on the subjugation of Palestinians, may be facing a precarious future, possibly marking the next domino to fall in this unfolding scenario.”

With technology being a significant pillar of Israel’s economy, investors are trying to remain hopeful despite the latest drop in VC investments being worse than that of the 2014 war with Gaza.

Maldives looks to impose travel ban on Israeli citizens

The Cradle | November 21, 2023

A member of the Maldives parliament, Mohamed Nasheed Abdulla, put forth a proposal on 20 November to amend the national Immigration Act in order to prohibit Israeli passport holders from entering the country following Israel’s indiscriminate aggression against the Gaza Strip.

The MP affirmed that the objective of the amendment of the Immigration Act is to impose sanctions on Tel Aviv via a travel ban on its citizens in the wake of Israel’s deadly besiege of the Gaza enclave. Currently, the Israeli military has killed over 12,300 Palestinian civilians, including over 5,000 children, since the start of Al-Aqsa Flood on 7 October.

The Maldives is a member of the Organization for Islamic Corporation (OIC) member, which has already invoked a travel ban on Israeli civilians. Abdulla is pushing to pass his proposal in alignment with the rest of the IOC and expressing Maldives’ solidarity with Palestine.

Last week, demonstrators gathered in front of the Maldivian parliament, voicing their anger over Israel’s actions and violence in Gaza, and calling for an immediate travel ban.

In January 2022, Israeli government sources claimed that the Maldives had initiated steps to rekindle diplomatic relations with Tel Aviv, a bond that was broken in 1974. Following the war on Gaza in 2014, the Maldives cut ties with Israel entirely and banned all imports from the country.

Since the start of the conflict, several countries have withdrawn their Israeli ambassadors, including Colombia, Honduras, Jordan, Bahrain, and Turkiye, while nations such as Bolivia and Belize have suspended relations with Israel.

Criticism of the Israeli government among EU officials has also heightened in recent weeks in response to Tel Aviv’s brutal campaign. Last week, the President of the Belgian Senate, Stephanie D’Hose rejected a request by the Israeli ambassador to Brussels to showcase a 47-minute film claiming to show atrocities committed by Hamas during its 7 October attack on Israel.

This came a week after the Deputy Prime Minister of Belgium, Petra De Sutter, urged the EU community to impose sanctions against Israel.

“We cannot look away while children are killed every day in Gaza,” De Sutter said.

“It is time for sanctions against Israel. The rain of bombs is inhumane. It is clear that Israel does not care about the international demands for a ceasefire.”

On 15 November, the Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez, also called on Israel to stop their aggression against Palestinians. His condemnation has been described as one of the harshest by a western leader since the start of the war. Madird’s Social Rights Minister, Ione Belarra, also condemned Israel’s approach.

Pro-Palestine activists shutting down arms factories that aid Gaza genocide

Press TV – November 21, 2023

A group of pro-Palestine activists on Monday blocked the driveway entrances to Lockheed Martin subsidiary ForwardEdgeASIC in the western US state of Minnesota for aiding the genocide in Gaza.

The demonstrators held banners that read “No money for weapons” and “Divest from Lockheed.”

Minnesota Anti-War Committee (AWC), an advocacy group that organizes street protests against US aid to the Israeli regime, in a post on X on Monday described the action as a “victory.”

“VICTORY!! Production was stopped ALL DAY at ForwardEdge ASIC, Lockheed’s subsidiary in St. Paul that makes microelectronics for weapons systems,” the tweet stated.

“Activists with the Free Palestine Coalition blocked entrances & faced down police for almost 8 hours! Building got decorated too!”

Andrew Josefchak, a member of the Minnesota AWC, was quoted as saying that they want Lockheed out of their city as it aids the genocide of civilians in Gaza.

“The reason why I’m here today specifically is because Lockheed’s bombs and jets are being used to massacre civilians,” he stated, noting that Lockheed provides weapons used by Israel to bomb Gaza.

As a mark of protest against the Israeli regime’s genocidal campaign against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, which has assumed alarming proportions, activists in Western countries have also upped the ante.

In recent weeks, pro-Palestine advocacy groups have intensified their campaign against corporations and industries that aid the occupying regime’s war crimes against Palestinians in the besieged territory.

On Sunday, the Minnesota AWC organized a rally on the bridge over the Mississippi River that saw the participation of thousands of protesters, who marched to Minnesota Governor Walz’s Eastcliff house.

“There is blood on the hands of not only these companies, but also Governor Tim Walz and his SBI for continuing to invest in these companies, and yet when we cry out for Israeli bombs to stop for good, when we demand an end to the brutal, unjustified occupation, we’re called anti-Semites,” Skyler Dorr, a worker at the University of Minnesota, was quoted as saying by Fightback News.

“We don’t want to teach our kids that genocide is okay, and we don’t want teachers fired for speaking out against Israel,” Drake Myers, a member of the Minnesota AWC, stated.

According to reports, the aerospace and weapons industry has seen a significant jump in profits after Israel launched its murderous attacks on Gaza on October 7.

As President Joe Biden’s $14 billion military aid for the Tel Aviv regime awaits congressional green light, companies such as Raytheon, Lockheed Martin, and Boeing are likely to have a big boost in profits.

It has enraged pro-Palestine activists in the US and other Western countries who have been organizing peaceful demonstrations and forcing the closure of factories belonging to these corporations.

Hundreds of pro-Palestine activists staged a protest at one of the entrances to US Air Force Plant 44 in Arizona on November 2, which Raytheon, a major US military contractor, operates.

“The bombs and the rockets and all those weapons of mass destruction are made in the US, so everybody needs to be held accountable who participates in this genocide, either directly or indirectly,” Abdulaziz, who attended the demonstration, was quoted as saying by Prism Reports.

Five days later, on November 8, half a dozen activists were arrested after they held a die-in protest outside the arms company’s offices in Arlington, Virginia. The protestors, however, remained unfazed.

On November 13, protesters stormed a Raytheon factory in California’s El Segundo, blocking its gates.

Similar demonstrations have been held against other military contractors as well, such as Boeing, which is one of the biggest arms importers to the Israeli regime.

A report in Bloomberg last month, citing unnamed US officials, said the company has accelerated the delivery of around 1,800 kits “that convert unguided bombs into precision munitions.”

On November 6, pro-Palestine demonstrators blocked the entrances to a Boeing factory in Missouri.

It was followed by another protest on November 9 outside the headquarters of Northrop Grumman in San Diego.

Northrop Grumman, according to the Mapping Project, sells “extensive amounts of weapons and military technologies to Israel, as well as the US military and US Customs and Border Protection (CBP).”

“Northrop Grumman is deeply complicit in Israel’s ethnic cleansing of Palestinians from their homeland and theft of Palestinian resources,” it states.

Pro-Palestine activists have also been targeting Elbit Systems, in both the US and the UK, in recent weeks. The largest weapons supplier to Israel has seen a staggering rise in its stocks since October 7.

On October 31, more than two weeks after Israel launched its genocidal attacks on Gaza, Palestine Action US “completely halted” a factory of Elbit Systems in Boston.

Hundreds of demonstrators chanted “Elbit Systems has got to go” and “You’re defending genocide of children”, calling for the closure of the arms factory.

According to its website, the American subsidiary of the arms company has operational facilities in the US states of Texas, New Hampshire, Alabama, Virginia and Florida.

Before the crackdown on the Boston plant, pro-Palestine activists also forced the closure of Elbit Systems’ Cambridge facility, “to prevent Elbit employees from going to work.”

“The weapons Israel is deploying to surveil, maim, and mass murder Palestinians are supplied by a company that operates right here in our city,” said the statement issued by the community members.

“Elbit weapons are being used to murder Palestinians right now. We will not let Elbit continue business as usual! Weapons companies don’t belong in our neighbourhoods!”

Palestine Action UK has also intensified its actions against Elbit Systems factories in England since October 7, with their activists even climbing the roof of the factory in the city of Lichfield.

“Palestine Action activists occupy the roof of the Israeli weapons factory Elbit Systems in the town of Shenstone, England, in protest of its production of equipment used in Israel’s murder of innocent Palestinians,” Palestine Action UK said in a statement on October 31.

Since July 2022, when pro-Palestine activists stormed the headquarters of Elbit Systems in London, the group has frequently targeted the company factories in different cities across the UK.

The group has permanently shut down at least two Elbit plants in less than two years, including its London headquarters and a Ferranti factory in Oldham, according to Counterfire.

In recent weeks, they have blockaded the entrance of the company’s Bristol plant, shutting down its operations. They have also closed the company’s factory in Kent.

Declassified UK recently revealed that the British government has approved at least £472m in arms sales to the Israeli regime in the past eight years, ignoring the genocide in Gaza and the occupied West Bank.

Meanwhile, eight Palestine Action activists, including the group’s co-founders, face trial at London’s Snaresbrook Crown Court for their protests against Elbit Systems

In Canada, pro-Palestine activists on Monday blocked a Canadian National Railway line in downtown Winnipeg, calling for an immediate halt to Tel Aviv’s unchecked aggression on Gaza.

The protesters, who carried Palestinian flags and signs that read “ceasefire now” and “Palestine will never die”, forced at least two trains to halt.

CN partners with Israel’s largest shipping company Integrated Shipping Services (ZIM). A protester was quoted as saying by CBC that CN is “very vital” for Israel to access the North American market.

Economic Implications of the Yemeni Seizure of the Galaxy Leader

Sputnik – 21.11.2023

As confirmed by multiple media sources, the ship seized by the Houthis in the Red Sea is the Bahamian flagged Galaxy Leader. According to marinetaffic.com, this ship is designed to carry vehicles, and has a capacity of 1500 passenger cars.

The ship was en route from the Turkish port of Korfez to the Indian port of Pipavav with 25 crew members, including Bulgarians, Filipinos, Mexicans and Ukrainians, but no Israelis on board.

According to Reuters, Netanyahu’s office described the ship as ” British-owned and Japanese-operated”, adding that, “There were no Israelis on the ship,” and “Israel was not involved in its ownership or operation.” However, Yemen’s official news agency, SABA, states that multiple Israeli news media have reported that “The ship controlled by the “Houthis” belongs to the Israeli billionaire Rami Unger, who is close to the Mossad.” Unger is, indeed, a veteran of the Intelligence Corp of the IDF, and has had a decades long close personal and business relationship with Yossi Cohen, the former Director of Mossad, and National Security Advisor to Netanyahu.

In 2019, the personal net worth of Rami Unger and his wife was estimated at $2.1 billion. In 2004, it was reported that Unger owned between 12 and 14 vehicle transport ships, worth about $50 million each, a reasonable estimate of the value of the Galaxy Leader, which was built in 2002. The political and economic impact of this operation goes far beyond the mere value of the ship.

In spite of the estimated $50 million cost/value of the ship, from an economic point of view, it is actually of little worth to the Houthis. They can’t sell it, they can’t use it, Unger and his insurance companies probably won’t ransom it. The ship was sailing without cargo, which if it had been, would have been approximately 1,500 new cars, worth between $20 and $30 million in total. So, clearly, there was no economic benefit from the seizure of the vessel for the Houthis, but the full political and economic ramifications remain to be seen.

It should be understood that the Houthis have not just seized the Galaxy Leader, they have put all Israeli shipping in the Red Sea under threat. The value of that shipping can be roughly estimated by the fact that out of Israel’s $165 billion in total exports in 2022, 24% went to Asian markets. The shortest shipping route from the Mediterranean to Asia is the Suez Canal. Everything that goes through the Suez Canal goes through the Red Sea, and 12% of all global trade passes through the Suez Canal. With these calculations, the economic impact on the Israeli economy by the seizure of this single ship can be estimated in the billions of dollars. The Houthi area of military operations in the southern Red Sea is more than 1,000 miles from Israel, and beyond the reach of timely Israeli military response.

Economic warfare and military warfare are two sides of the same coin. The Houthis, with one helicopter and less than a dozen commandos, have hit the Israeli economy as hard as the entire Israeli military is hitting the people of Gaza. All in all, it must be admitted, it was a successful gambit. Especially considering that it was a bloodless operation in which, unlike the Israeli operation in Gaza, no one was harmed.

Of course, like the October 7th Hamas attack, Netanyahu could very well try to exploit this incident to “justify” another Israeli attack, this time on Iran. War is by nature, always full of dangers and deception. However, the Houthis are likely to find broad and real support for their raid across the Arab and Muslim world.

In an announcement by Yemeni Armed Forces, ” the Armed Forces renewed their warning to all ships belonging to the Israeli enemy or dealing with it that they will become a legitimate target. It called on all countries whose nationals work in the Red Sea to refrain from any work or activity with Israeli ships or ships owned by Israelis.” The statement pointed out that the operations of the armed forces only threaten the ships of Israel and those owned by Israelis, as was previously indicated.

US attempts to single-handedly resolve Israel-Palestine conflict failing – Putin

RT | November 21, 2023

The escalation between Israel and Hamas that has already led to the “deaths of thousands of people” has come as a result of America’s desire to single-handedly decide the fate of the standoff between Israel and Palestine, Russian President Vladimir Putin said at an emergency BRICS video conference on Tuesday.

The US had sidelined other members of the Middle East Quartet – a group seeking to navigate the Israeli-Palestinian peace process that also includes Russia, the UN, and EU – the Russian leader said. Instead, Washington has sought to “monopolize the role of the mediator” while blocking the efforts of other international actors, he added.

“The history has vividly demonstrated that attempts to single-handedly cut the Palestinian knot are not viable and counterproductive,” Putin said.

UN decisions envisaging the establishment of “two independent sovereign states – Israel and Palestine,” ended up being sabotaged, the Russian president told the conference. This has led to a situation in which “generations of Palestinians were raised in an atmosphere … of injustice,” while the Israelis could not fully guarantee the security of their state, he added.

The current conflict in Gaza has already led to the deaths of thousands, a massive exodus of civilians from the enclave, and a humanitarian catastrophe, Putin said, calling these developments a cause for the “deepest concern.”

Russia urges the international community to unite in an effort to achieve a speedy de-escalation and a ceasefire in Gaza, as well as a political solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the president said, adding that the BRICS nations and regional actors could play a leading role in this process.

Raisi Calls on BRICS Leaders to Use Economic, Political Opportunities to Pressure Israel

Sputnik – 21.11.2023

TEHRAN – Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi on Tuesday called on BRICS leaders to use all economic and political opportunities to put pressure on Israel.

Amid escalating horrors in the Gaza Strip during the “second phase” of Israel’s conflict with Hamas, the former has intensified its actions, resulting in a rise in civilian casualties. Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, in response, has called on BRICS leaders to leverage economic and political avenues to exert pressure on the Israeli government.

“The United States has made all international organizations faceless. Iran wants BRICS members and governments to stand up for security, establish justice and fight racial discrimination in the world, as well as use all their political and economic opportunities and power to exert pressure on Israel and its supporters from Western countries,” Raisi at the BRICS extraordinary summit on the Middle East.

Raisi urged the BRICS countries to recognize the Israeli government as a “terrorist regime.”

“Israel’s continuous attacks on hospitals, medical centers and religious sites, as well as the murder of women and children, doctors, nurses and journalists are acts of terrorism, and it is necessary to recognize the Israeli regime as a terrorist regime and its army as a terrorist organization,” Raisi said.

BRICS countries must adopt a resolution at the UN to stop Israel’s crimes in the Gaza Strip, Raisi said.

China labels Canadian side ‘thief crying stop thief’ after media exposes rift between ‘two Michaels’

By Chen Qingqing and Wang Tianmi | Global Times | November 20, 2023

The Chinese Embassy in Canada said on Monday that Canadian side hyping up of so-called “arbitrary detention” of “two Michaels” is purely a case of a thief crying stop thief and it fully exposed Canada’s hypocrisy, after the Canadian media the Globe and Mail revealed that one of the two Canadians blamed his fellow inmate for sharing intelligence on North Korea with Canada and allied spy services.

One of the two Canadians jailed by China for nearly three years in a case that was at the heart of a diplomatic crisis is seeking a multimillion-dollar settlement from Ottawa, Canadian media reported, citing two sources. Michael Spavor alleged that he was detained because he unwittingly provided intelligence on North Korea to Canada and allied spy services.

He alleges that the deception was conducted by fellow Canadian prisoner Michael Kovrig, and it was intelligence work by the latter that led to both men’s incarceration by Chinese authorities, according to the Globe and Mail.

Two Canadians confessed their guilt for crimes they committed in China and were released on bail for medical reasons before they departed China by plane to Canada on September 24, 2021.

Spavor, who was sentenced in August, 2021 to 11 years in prison for espionage and illegal provision of China’s state secrets to foreign entities, was found to have taken photos and videos of Chinese military equipment on multiple occasions and illegally provided some of those photos to people outside China. He also had personal property of 50,000 yuan ($7,700) confiscated.

The photos and videos Spavor took during his time in China have been identified as second-tier state secrets.

Spavor was a key informant for Kovrig and provided him with information over a long period. Sources told the Global Times that from 2017 to 2018, Kovrig entered China using the forged identity of a businessman and had collected a large amount of information on China’s national security through his contacts in Beijing, Shanghai and Jilin in Northeast China.

However, Canada had repeatedly denied that the two Canadians were involved in espionage, insisting that the “arbitrary detention” of the two Canadians was in retaliation for the arrest of Meng Wanzhou, a senior Huawei executive, in Canada in 2018.

Confidential negotiations are taking place between Toronto lawyer John K. Phillips, who is representing Spavor, and Patrick Hill, executive director and senior counsel at the federal Department of Justice and Global Affairs Canada, the Globe and Mail reported, citing unnamed sources.

Phillips is alleging that his client was arrested by China because of information that he shared with Kovrig. That information, he alleges, was later passed on, unbeknownst to Spavor, to the Canadian government and its Five Eyes spy-service partners in the course of Kovrig’s duties as a diplomat with the Foreign Affairs department’s Global Security Reporting Program, according to the media report.

He is also alleging, the sources say, that a senior diplomat in Beijing had conversations with Kovrig about his relationship with Spavor after Kovrig took a leave of absence from Global Affairs Canada in 2017 to join the International Crisis Group (ICG), an independent, non-governmental global think tank.

The spy row between the two Canadians has triggered a wide ranging discussions, as observers believed that it not only put the Canadian government in an awkward position but is also a slap in the face for its accusation against China on so-called arbitrary detention.

A third highly placed source told The Globe that Kovrig was considered an intelligence asset, as a diplomatic officer at the Global Security Reporting Program (GSRP) within the Canadian embassy in Beijing, and later when based in Hong Kong at International Crisis Group.

The source said Kovrig was not an employee of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service but that information he gathered in China was viewed as valuable by the spy agency.

However, a Canadian department spokesperson told the Canadian media that GSRPs operates openly and meet with a broad range of contacts on a voluntary basis. The program does not recruit or run human sources, and it does not pay for information.

The information exposed by Canadian media once again demonstrates that China’s legal actions against two Michaels were legitimate, as they indeed engaged in activities inconsistent with their stated identities, Li Haidong, a professor at the China Foreign Affairs University, told the Global Times.

Meanwhile, Canada’s accusations against China are filled with falsehoods, reversing right and wrong, in an attempt to spread misinformation about China in the international community and to conceal its own inappropriate actions, Li said.

Canada’s rebuttal overestimates its own ability to spread rumors, the expert said. From reports of Canadian media, we have essentially come to learn that Canadian personnel, under the guise of “diplomats,” have been involved in activities related to intelligence work, he said.

Even after so much information has been revealed, Canada remains obstinately unenlightened, failing to honestly disclose the truth of the matter to the public. Instead, Canada continues to obscure the facts and even falsely accuse China, reflecting Canada’s lack of sincerity in dealing with China-related affairs and its attempt to tarnish China’s image in the international community, Li said.

“We advise Canada to face up to the facts and reflect deeply on its own mistakes, rather than continue to attack and discredit China and mislead the public,” a spokesperson from the Chinese embassy in Canada said.
