US Senator dismisses Israeli military probe on Abu Akleh’s murder

Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Akleh

A US Senator has dismissed an Israeli military investigation that claims there is a “high possibility” that veteran Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Akleh was “accidentally hit” by an Israeli soldier in the occupied West Bank four months ago.

Democratic Senator Chris Van Hollen for Maryland posted a tweet on Wednesday, saying the existing evidence did not support the claim that a soldier accidentally killed Abu Akleh in the midst of a gun battle in Jenin.

Van Hollen said the United Nations and reconstructions by major news outlets had found the female journalist was not in the immediate vicinity of fighting with the Palestinian resistance fighters and could not have been caught in the crossfire.

“The crux of the ‘defense’ in this military report is that a soldier was ‘returning fire’ from armed Palestinians” when Abu Akleh was struck, Van Hollen said. “But investigations … found no such firing at the time. This underscores need for independent US inquiry into this American journalist’s death.”

The Committee to Protect Journalists has labeled the Israeli report “late and incomplete.”

“They provided no name for Shireen Abu [Akleh’s] killer and no other information than his or her own testimony that the killing was a mistake.”

Palestinian officials, rights advocates, and family of the slain journalist have already denounced the findings of the Israeli inquiry.

The journalist’s niece, Lina Abu Akleh, said the family had no confidence in the report. “We could never expect any type of accountability or legitimate investigation from the very entity responsible for gunning down an unarmed and clearly identifiable journalist.”

The family said an independent American investigation was “the bare minimum the US government should do for one of their own citizens.” The family also said Abu Akleh’s killing was a “war crime.”

On Monday, the Israeli military admitted that the journalist was “accidentally” killed by the regime’s gunfire on May 11, saying, however, that it will open no criminal investigation into the assassination.

The acknowledgement came after a final Israeli investigation concluded there was a “high possibility” the journalist had been shot dead by an Israeli soldier who mistook her for an armed Palestinian.

The report claimed she could have been shot by Palestinian gunfire even though all independent investigations on the shooting have totally dispelled the allegation.

Wearing press attire, the 51-year-old journalist was murdered in cold blood while covering an Israeli military raid. Later, her funeral was also attacked by the regime forces.

Israel’s account shifted several times over the four months. However, eyewitness accounts and videos of Abu Akleh and the area around her at the time of her killing do not show a gun battle.

A United Nations investigation earlier found Israeli soldiers fired “several single, seemingly well-aimed bullets” at Abu Akleh and other journalists.

Investigations by the New York Times, Washington Post, and CNN have questioned the official Israeli version of the episode.

Abu Akleh’s tragic death sent shock waves across the region, drawing global condemnation. Critics say the Israeli military has a long history of dissembling and making false claims over the killings of civilians.

  1. “Van Hollen said the United Nations and reconstructions by major news outlets had found the female journalist was not in the immediate vicinity of fighting with the Palestinian resistance fighters and could not have been caught in the crossfire.”

Gee, how could an American Senator get it so wrong? They ALWAYS support Israeli Terrorists, EVERY TIME(Remember the SS LIBERTY?). I suspect the ‘American Senator’ has been told what to say, by the throng of “Dual Passport Holders” who INFEST the American Government(on both sides of the house)…..

  2. Shireen Abu Akleh was murdered. Israel murdered her, an American citizen.

Israel trots out disclaimers, dismissals or denials, that murder becomes routine for Israel.

Murder by Israel is routine, allowed and even encouraged, celebrated. Where else but Israel, would soldiers call their breakfast, “Rachel Corrie pancakes.”

And who is to bring Israel to trial? For to be brought to trial, evidence must be filed, filed with an authority which has jurisdiction and an indictment must be brought forth.

Israel has replied to the International Criminal Court authority, that the ICC has “…no jurisdiction over Israel.” for example, in relation to past, otherwise for any other country, at least an investigation.

This is akin to Israel saying that it is not a signatory to the International Atomic Energy Commission. Therefor, Israel need not bother itself with any reply to any question as to its having nuclear weapons.

All this and more, leads to a conclusion that Israel is a rogue state. So, what is a rogue state? A rogue can be defined as, “a dishonest or unprincipled man.”

But Israel is worse, by far. Of the many ways how so, consider the situation at hand. Israel (that being, its military, which is of the government) routinely murders quasi-citizens and the murderers–including the government of Israel–are involved with legal proceedings that are “dishonest or unprincipled”.

Israel would contest that, but so much of the honest and principled nations and people do not agree that Israel is honest or principled.

Perhaps, the dishonest and unprincipled hold with Israel.

Now, take these murders further: Shireen Abu Akleh was not a quasi-citizen of Israel. She was an American citizen.

So was Rachel Corrie. The driver of the military tractor was never identified. Or indicted. Or tried. Or was a verdict rendered. Rachel Corrie was murdered. Israel murdered her.

The lack of trials is an indictment of Israel being a rogue, criminal state.

Why does America aligns itself to such a criminal, rogue state?

Israel is not an ally to America. It is the opposite.

Because Israel has taken control of the USA by stealth, from within. Your politicians are ‘BOUGHT’ OWNED, and BLACKMAILED’, by Israel…..It is SO OBVIOUS, but no one is brave enough to call them out.
Tiny Israel, has got your ASS!

  3. Zionist bastards. Unspeakably arrogant, brazen, criminal, lying, psychotic, godless, inhuman Zionist bastards….

Resist them, brave Palestinians. Continue to resist the bastards with increasing ferocity, resolve, and steadfastness until the very weight of their malevolence causes the civilized world to “put paid” to them. Insha’allah.

Viva Palestine! Shireen Abu-Akleh, R.I.P. If you are able to do so, my martyred sister, please rest in peace.

    • I’m surprised that you haven’t be labelled as an “anti-Semite” by now Robert, but, maybe they realise that the barb, anti Semite, has lost its meaning after being aimed at EVERYONE with a legitimate criticism of Israel’s criminal behaviour, around the World.

“An anti-Semite” used to be someone who hated Jews. Now it means, Someone who Jews hate….Joe Sobran.

      • Brian, my “harshness” (cum-‘anti-semitism’?) has been duly noted even by local friends/dissidents since as far back as 2003. Now, at near-79 yo, I find myself evermore candid, cynical, jaded, sarcastic, unrestrained and, yes, harsh, in my condemnation of the entire fabric of political/militant Zionism. I’ve been wondering if I’m subject to censorship and being drummed off Aletho News or several other sites I frequent. Just lately, I’ve joined the “arabi souri” forum and have been hyper-vitriolic in commenting, inter alia, about the Zionists’ repeated bombing — with zero accountability, natch — of sovereign Syria’s Damascus and Aleppo International Airports and other airfields and venues subjected to the evildoers’ diabolical targeting. I’ve been concerned (paranoid?) enough to ask a local, Arab World-rooted friend what she thinks of my up-tempoed rhetoric and if she has similar concerns that my space might be invaded-and-occupied by the FBI. But sh*t: I’ve been furiously downsizing and easing myself out of “life” over a period of more than a year…a ‘comfy’ 6×9 jail cell doesn’t seem all that unappealing…but I won’t go out (in?) quietly, genuflecting and apologizing (!) to the ‘Chosen People’ (as perverted and corrupted internally)–as seems the “right or only” thing to do by many, many, too many dissidents-become-effective-hypocritical-cowardly-accomplices to the Zionist agenda….

Brian, you’re effective at providing “quotable quotes” (cf. Sobran above). One of the quotes I always return to is that of Zionist (and bigtime lubricant of the Dem-wing-of-the-political-duopoly in ZioOccupiedWashDC): Billionaire full-on Zionist and dual-loyalist Haim Saban … “I’m a one-issue guy, and my issue is Israel.” Well, that can go a “Palestine-issue” way, as well…unfortunately, I’m not a billionaire. (If I’m permitted to do so in this space, here’s a current/corroborating gem of investigative journalism/reporting: .)

Let’s give Senator Van Hollen his due: He seems a remarkably objective and clear-headed observer of the scene “over there.” I’m involved in an issue right now that includes him as a potential uber-valuable sign-on/supporter. If he ultimately betrays us/my group and the Palestinians, I’ll sit right here and weep…but I’ll not cease my go-to exhortation … “Viva Palestine!”

Well, with that screed, it’s (past) my bedtime. Cheers!

        Viva Palestine!

        • Most people are cowed when labelled as “Anti-Semites” because being an anti-Semite is just about the worst crime an American (or the rest of us) can commit, but only in the eyes of ‘Semites’.
The power and influence they have over the USA Government is total and complete, and just for saying that, I will be labelled as, an “anti-Semite” but, who cares, if it’s applicable?
The USA is controlled by people who ‘don’t give a Ferk’ about the USA. And it is so obvious.
