Israel officials intervene to have US academic removed

MEMO | October 1, 2021

Israeli diplomats reportedly put pressure on the dean of a US university to have a teacher critical of the occupation state removed using allegations of anti-Semitism. Details of the intervention by Israeli consular officials, in what has been slammed as another example of the gross interference by a foreign state, were reported by the Intercept.

Israeli consular officials in the southeast US arranged meetings with a dean at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to remove graduate student, Kylie Broderick, from teaching the history department course called ‘The Conflict over Israel/Palestine’. Details of the visit by Israeli officials are said to have been exposed by two UNC professors who had knowledge of the meeting.

The intervention by the Israeli officials followed a pressure campaign by right-wing pro-Israel websites and an advocacy group who pointed to postings Broderick had made on Twitter that criticised Israel and Zionism and, without evidence, cited the postings as evidence of anti-Semitism.

Over the past few years there has been a concerted campaign to conflate anti-Semitism with criticism of Israel using the adoption of a highly controversial definition of racism known as the International Holocaust Definition of anti-Semitism. Seven of the 11 examples of anti-Semitism cited in the IHRA conflate criticism of Israel with anti-Semitism. Critics have argued that its adoption has had a chilling effect on all levels of society especially in universities and campuses.

The two UNC professors revealed that in addition to the intervention by the Israeli government, the university faced pressure from a member of the US House of Representatives.

“It is not a new phenomenon where outside parties have tried to stifle academic freedom on this subject,” Broderick is reported saying. “But these people have never seen me teach, never seen my past evaluations which have said that I treat students fairly, and thus have no right to dictate what I say inside the classroom.”

“I think that a representative of a foreign government attempting to police an academic class is, in the first place, ridiculous, and an obvious overreaction to what is essentially an issue that started on Twitter,” Broderick added. “I also think it is strange that the Israeli consulate general was granted an audience. If this was a class on Hungary or Australia, would the university have permitted the attempted interference of a foreign government? The fact that this meeting happened at all is clearly a threat to academic freedom.”

  1. The Term “Anti-Semitism” is used as a tool, to suppress any legitimate criticism of the Government of Israel, and it’s treatment of the Palestinian people(and there’s plenty to criticise). Such is the power of Israel, over “The most powerful nation on Earth”…….
Americans should “Stand up for America” first, and to Hell with Israel. Take your country back!

  2. How repugnant. That a foreign nation/state can do this to a citizen of the United States is a way to cancel one of the most important of the Bill of Rights of that American citizen. Or any.

Israel and its partisans seek to destroy the rights of American citizens.

Any other way to regard this?

    • “Once we squeeze everything we can out of the United States, it can dry up and blow away”…….Benjamin Netanyahu……..(who was subsequently given 27 standing ovations when he addressed the American Congress)..
And America just keeps giving Billions of dollars to Israel, for FREE, EVERY YEAR……….It’s almost as if, the USA Government has been hypnotised, by Israel……

      WAKE UP, America……!!!.

  3. God Damn (i) militant/political settler-colonial Zionism, (ii) the Zionist state-terrorist platform squatting on Palestinians’ rightful lands and (iii) every agent or fellow traveler bending the knee and prostituting for the aforementioned.

One truth anyone must recognize: the US pro-Palestinian community in effect aids and abets these Zionist scofflaws via inaction. If the situation were reversed (fat chance!), the President or Chancellor or Dean or whoever served as Zionism’s agent for UNC-CH would have been “avalanched” by outrage, a multitide of letters, full-page ads in Zio-controlled MSM outlets demands for retention of the instructor involved, and recriminations against UNC-CH or any other educational institution that had or might have the temerity to act ethically and morally against “the Jews…the ultimate Victim.” Here, not a peep. This report is my first knowledge of this infringement on free speech that is a lesson to all academicians (including, of course, academicians like Kylie Broderick who have aspirations to pursue and excel in the teaching profession).

    Viva Palaestine!

    • Hmm: At this site (report dated 10-01-2021), the final sentence of the author’s text is “Broderick is teaching the course as planned this semester.” — https://www.insidehighered.com/quicktakes/2021/09/30/israeli-diplomat-accused-grad-instructor-anti-semitism .”

Can anyone sort out the conflicting information (i.e., has KB been “removed” or not)? I’m considering calling UNC-CH or contacting the InsideHigherEd reporter (I’d enter her name her and confirm the verbiage of her sentence quoted above by me plus the report date I recall as 10-01 [or was it 9-30?], but I’ve just recently purchased a new computer and haven’t figured out how to have two sites open — allowing for switching back and forth without having my words here deleted — at the same time.)

If I don’t pursue this point, I will be guilty, even if in a minor, technical way, of violating my own word “inaction” in my first comment above. I think it important to know this factoid…and, inter alia, better discern just how ‘powerful’ that Zionist consular guy was/is or, for that matter, the Manning (House of Rep., NC) woman who, InsideHigherEd informs us, bitched about Ph.D candidate Kylie Broderick…. If KB is allowed to teach this semester, one can only speculate that the Zios will have a rep in her class, or cultivate a student-spy to inform them, as to KB’s “toeing the line” of never getting to…gasp!…”antisemitism” or any hint of same. One can also only imagine that KB will have to watch and parse her every word, facial expression, body language, and instructor-student interaction during the semester; not a comfortable scenario and not conducive to the ideal of full-and-unfettered “academic freedom”….
