Family of Shireen Abu Akleh asks to meet with Biden

The family of slain Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh has accused the United States of providing impunity for Israel over her killing and asked to meet President Joe Biden in person during his trip to Israel next week, reports Reuters.

In a letter to Biden posted on Twitter on Friday, the family said the administration simply adopted the Israeli government’s conclusions over her death, which it described as extrajudicial killing while falling short of its own stated goal of ensuring full accountability.

“Your administration’s engagement has served to whitewash Shireen’s killing and perpetuate impunity,” said the letter, signed by her brother Anton Abu Akleh on the family’s behalf.

“It is as if you expect the world and us to now just move on. Silence would have been better.” The family asked to see all the information the administration has collected on the issue.

Abu Akleh was killed on May 11 during an Israeli raid in the occupied West Bank town of Jenin under bitterly disputed circumstances.

Last month the United Nations human rights office said evidence suggested Israeli military fire had killed Abu Akleh while she stood with other reporters and was identifiable as a journalist.

The State Department on Monday said she was likely killed by gunfire from Israeli positions but it was probably unintentional and independent investigators could not reach a definitive conclusion about the origin of the bullet that struck her.

Palestinian officials criticized the report and maintained she had been deliberately targeted by an Israeli soldier. Israel denied this.

In his first Middle East trip as president on July 13-16, Biden is expected to meet separately with Palestinian and Israeli leaders. The Abu Akleh case will be a diplomatic and domestic test for new Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid.

A group of 24 US senators in Biden’s Democratic Party last month urged him to ensure direct U.S. involvement in the investigation of Abu Akleh’s killing.

  1. Noted. I have an easy fix here: when Dementia Biden (surely condescendingly) visits the Illegally Zionist-Occupied West Bank, let him enter the office of Abu Mazen and — voila! — come face to face with the Abu Akleh family waiting to accost him.

Shireen Abu Akleh: R.I.P., if “peace” is in the offing for you despite your horrific assassination via the bloody sights of a Zionist sniper.

  2. The family of Shireen Abu Akleh, appealing to ANY American President, to confront Israel for the shooting death of an American/Palestinian journalist, is surely doomed to failure.

Successive Israeli Prime Ministers know that the USA would not make any demands on Israel, Israel makes demands on the USA, and usually succeeds in it’s “requests”, by their Agents in America’s “Department of State”, which is heavily influenced by ISRAELI DUAL PASSPORT HOLDERS, who claim to be American, but who’s loyalties lie, completely with Israel, or hasn’t anyone noticed yet?

    Israel pulls America’s strings.

  3. Good idea. Politicians react when the media is involved. Fleet Street’s St.Bride’s Church, hosted over 50 people for the Thanksgiving, on 28th June, in honour of Shireen – and 46 other journalists murdered by Israelis. The most courageous, uniquely honest and effective journalist, Peter Oborne was there, famous for outing Israeli conspiracies to manipulate our politicians and foreign policies in their own selfish malevolent interests, e.g. in his documentary ‘The Lobby’. There was even the honourable Jeremy Corbyn, the best Prime Minister we should have had, but for foreign treachery by the illegal Israel lobby. And Tommy Sheppard MP was there, another brave and selfless supporter of Palestinian Human Rights,
Brian’s assessment of the strangle-hold which the ‘Occupiers of Capitol Hill’ have on corruptible US Presidents and Representatives is tragically accurate. But rather than despair, we must try to repair the damage and take every opportunity to “Shame the Devil”, as Gerard Menuhin beseeches in his ‘Biblical’ book, in the belief that Justice must triumph over evil – in the end. But it needs massive and concerted effort. Every little helps!

    • A significant and appreciated comment! I ask — in disclosure, I am woefully ignorant of UK politics and societal goings-on beyond the mere surface; and deficient in internet research at that — if you can tell us: were the estimables Jonathan Cook and George Galloway among the Shireen-honoring 50? And perhaps another pesonal hero: the Rev. Stephen Sizer who has been pilloried so relentlessly? Was the event of 6-28 recorded and archived so that I might drop in?

“Shame the Devil”: Indeed! The Devil is alive and, sadly, well, slithering among us overtly and covertly: manipulating, shaming, libeling/slandering, false-flagging, blackmailing (Jeffrey Epstein!), assassinating (Shireen = the latest victim), maneuvering and controlling the discourse via diverting the essence of truth and justice, thinning into weak and tasteless gruel the broth of dissent, dividing and conquering all who dare to challenge that Devil of Iniquity and False Victimhood…. (And behold: this unholiness surely transpires here, there, everywhere: the ‘entangled ally’ US as prime co-conspirator, UK, Canada, Australia, Germany [pitiable Germany, destined to pay tribute and forgo truth, justice, honor and decency for any forseeable future].) Ahhh: This Devil Needs Shaming!–for the sake of any move(s) toward the advancement of civilization (sic)! We must divest ourselves from submissiveness, cowardice, failure to resolutely, courageously confront et al — and expose and overcome this particular [I firmly believe psychosis-afflicted] “Devil-Emperor/Colonizer” that wears too many clothes!

“…massive and concerted effort.” We the dissident and disaffected mass of “humans leading lives of quiet desperation” (h/o to Henry David Thoreau) have before our very eyes and in our faces the we-must-acknowledge-as-being *masters* of this massive, concerted — focused, Croesus wealthy — enterprise of settler-colonial-militant Zionism manifested in the sordid, devilish/satanic/diabolical art of…all of the above, and so much more.

Above all else, let us pity and pray for the Palestinians as they suffer “knee on neck” decades of torment, humiliation, persecution, collective punishment, illegal Occupation, Apartheid et al. Palestine Is Still THE Issue! Viva Palestine!

The very worst reality and insult to this US-domiciled observer-in-disbelief: We are *all* Palestinians now….

Nonetheless, full agreement: “Every little helps!”!

  4. Thank you for your appreciative and extensive response. The admirable Rev. Stephen Sizer, George Galloway, and Jonathan Cook keep a low profile on these matters. But it’s possible they were busy, too far away or didn’t know of it. A number of people I mentioned it to regretted not hearing of it. Such is the repression of communications. Al Jazeera may have recorded it, as the UK head gave a Tribute, but no announcement made. The Palestine Ambassador and the Chair of Palestine Solidarity Campaign attended. Indeed, “we are all Palestinians now” in more ways than one.
