On the demonization of Saddam Hussein and Manuel Noriega

An excerpt from the recently published book The Mother of All Battles: The Endless U.S.-Iraq War by Malcom Lagauche:

In December 2003, we all saw the photos of a disheveled Saddam Hussein after he was pulled out of a “spider hole” in a town near Tikrit. The administration laughed and the U.S. public made jokes about him and his hiding place.

The room was dirty. There was an empty can of Spam. The story was that he was holed up there and was totally irrelevant to Iraq. His day was done and he was now in the hands of Iraq’s liberators. What you saw wasn’t real. Nothing of this scenario was true.

On March 8, 2005, United Press International (UPI) ran a short press release titled “Public Version of Saddam Capture Fiction.” It received little publicity in the U.S., but some foreign news agencies did run the story

The UPI press release consisted of quotes from an ex-U.S. Marine of Lebanese descent, Nadim Rabeh. In addition to the U.S. version of the capture date being off by two days, during an interview in Lebanon, Rabeh stated:

I was among the 20-man unit, including eight of Arab descent, who searched for Saddam for three days in the area of Dour near Tikrit, and we found him in a modest home in a small village and not in a hole as announced. We captured him after fierce resistance during which a Marine of Sudanese origin was killed.

Rabeh recounted how Saddam fired at them with a gun from the window of a room on the second floor. Then, the Marines shouted at him in Arabic, “You have to surrender. There is no point in resisting.”

How did we come to see the pictures of the hole and a scruffy-looking Saddam Hussein? According to Rabeh, “Later on, a military production team fabricated the film of Saddam’s capture in a hole, which was in fact a deserted well.”

The former Marine’s account mixes with the rendition Saddam Hussein gave his lawyer when they had their first meeting. Saddam told him that he was captured in a friend’s house and that he was drugged and tortured for two days, hence the pictures of Saddam looking bedraggled.

All the major news networks and publications showed pictures of the hole and a beleaguered Saddam: Time Magazine, CNN News, magazines, daily newspapers, etc. You name it and they published it. But, they were all wrong. Not one publication took the time to research the story. They ran the pictures supplied by the U.S. military and parroted the lines they were given.

This was not the first time something similar has occurred. After the 1989 invasion of Panama, the U.S. allowed the press to enter Manuel Noriega’s office. He was portrayed as a sexual pervert. In the office were pictures of young boys, a picture of Hitler, red underpants and pornographic magazines.

A few months later, the first Marine to enter Noriega’s office was released from the Corps. He eventually talked to a reporter and gave his story of the encounter. He maintained that the contents of the office included only a desk, a telephone, a chair, and a typewriter.

With Saddam, the props were changed. They were made to make Saddam look like a caged animal on the run who only had the basic elements to survive. No one asked questions of what should have been obvious. For instance, how did Saddam Hussein come into possession of a can of Spam? There was absolutely no place in Iraq where Spam was sold. It contains pork, a food forbidden from a Moslem’s diet.

A few months after his capture, a picture was widely distributed that gained much publicity. It showed a bunch of U.S. soldiers standing next to an Iraqi building on which a painted illustration depicted the blowing up of the World Trade Center. The inference was that Iraqis took glee in the acts of the destruction of the World Trade Center on 9-11-2001.

If one looked close, it was evident that the soldiers were standing on the base path of a disused baseball field. There were no baseball fields in Iraq. Upon closer scrutinizing, the trees were typical southeastern U.S. types that are not indigenous to Iraq.

The photo was bogus. It was filmed in the U.S., but, the harm had been done. Many news agencies had distributed the picture. Its contents inflamed U.S. citizens even more about the Iraqi people.

  3. Dogs. Absolute dogs. We are and have been for many years. Somebody bomb us now! Please! Puhlease! Put us out of our misery, NOW!

We have no right to live if you use WWII Germany as a benchmark. We are them.

    • With acknowledgment like this, there is hope yet for some Americans. How can the rest of the world believe anything that comes out of America when everything she says cannot be believed and is suspect?

America choose to represent herself as the Bastion of Democracy, A standard for the world in Truth and Justice when in fact she speaks with a forked tongue as enunciated by an “Injun” in a cowboy movie, I remember seeing in 1950’s.

Under G W Bush & Cheney especially, every word that comes out of their mouths is suspect. How can America forgive and forget these two main culprits who stood up as the upright leaders of an honest society when in fact they are the lowest of low scoundrels?

Look what they have done to the country, the world and the planet. How can Americans still allow these monsters to not only walk free but walk tall?

How much punishment can collective America take and willing to take?

Bush once said that the rest of the world is jealous of the American way of life. Wrong! they do not envy the Americans but they loathe and resent the way the rest of the world is treated by
America as if it does not matter and the Americans can do what they like and how they like with them. That is why so many Americans are not welcomed in many parts of the world.

Americans are so rich, supposedly so educated and so smart and with one of the free-est media in the whole world, how can so many be fooled by so few for so long is beyond rational thinking. When will she ever wake up to the tricks and lies fed her by her wily, corrupt and cunning politicians?

There were talks of a greening of America, a long while ago. It did not happen. Do the average American care enough to have the will to change? Do they want to change?

Not only do the people depend on an honest and upright America but the future of the world and indeed, Mother Earth depend on a clean and honest leader who not only do what it says, but say what it does.

      Now go figure!

  7. Baseball field? That’s why soccer goalposts are clearly visible on the right? There’s no evidence here of a baseball field. If you’re exposing other peoples lies, don’t leave ends of your own untied.

  8. Alex,

That’s not a soccer goalpost. I would like some more definite identification of the trees though. Any Southerners care to comment?

  10. Here are a few other anomalies you forgot to mention:
-In the photograph of where Saddam was captured there are visible ripened yellow dates which is simply not possible in December
-Saddam’s facial hair was gray yet the hair on his head was all black. Are we supposed to believe that Saddam managed to dye his hair while he was hiding out in that little hole?
-And last but not least here’s a link which shows that the dental work on the Saddam they found in this hole is very different when compared to pictures of him prior to the US invasion->
I say “the Saddam they found” because it is a well known fact that Saddam had many body doubles.
Another thing Saddam Hussein is a 33rd degree freemason. I’m sure this was just to make the public think that he’s dead so that it appears some good came out of the Iraqi invasion.

While they’ve convinced the general public that Saddam’s dead, they’re also successfully convincing the herd of sheeple that Bin Laden is still alive. Oh ya and that Tamiflu is actually effective at preventing swine flu, i mean H1N1 you wouldn’t want the pork industry to lose money over this “epidemic”. Calling it H1N1 flu instead of Swine flu enables Glaxo smith Kline to make huge profit without effecting the pork industry’s profit. Oh ya and carbon dioxide the gas that plants inhale causes global warming.. who’d of thunk it and remember the record amounts of heroin being produced in Afghanistan has nothing to do with the invasion its a mere coincidence, I’m they would’ve produced 6900 tons of heroin in 2008 regardless of whether or not the invasion occurred in 2001, the year that heroin production was at a record low and only 100 tonnes of heroin was produced
I can’t believe how much bullshit we’re all constantly being fed from the MSM

  12. Of course the real issue is whether or not the mural is genuine and if so where had it been displayed. This is a question that a well financed journalist could probably get to the bottom of. But of course no one has taken it up.

Frankly, the architecture could be US but of course this photo could have been done most anywhere.

  13. Noriega knew of Bush #1’s drug dealing CIA connection in Central America, California. That is why a deposed military leader of no threat or value has been locked away for life in Maximum Security. Hussein was demonized because he “left the reservation” of being a US puppet, as Dewey Claridge used to say. If America only knew what an utterly corrupt racket the Intelligence Establishment is…especially since it has been militarized by NSA, DIA, etc. Ever wonder why “reform” of the CIA is a dead issue, and why DCI Panetta went from critic to booster? Once in the door they sucked him in fir good.

  14. We all know that mainstream media and the movie industry is controlled by jews and that these people are just thieves pretending to be “chosen people”. This is what needs to be settled once and for all. There is abundant proof that the bible stories of the jews are false. I have more on this at I have also linked to the video about Obama having no Hawaii birth certificate. This is on the law page. The lies will keep coming as these people become more desperate to hang onto your wealth. It is simply about theft of Palestine and control of the wealth of as many countries as possible. They make laws that take your money for themselves. Lawyers play along because they get a piece of the action.

  16. Ummm… a can of spam!!! Spam is a pork product, and it’s against the muslim religion to eat pork. When I was there, I don’t believe there was ever a can of pork in the entire country. Definitely a fake…wag the dog situation.

    Comment by TC | June 15, 2010

  17. The reason for the can of Spam is something that I have started to notice more often (now that I am looking for these sorts of things). Next time you see something like the above staged bullshit look for the obvious insult to your intelligence. The people that plan and propgate these things like to laugh at the people that swallow their lies and the Spam is a prime example.

  19. The US invasion of Iraq was for oil and Israel. Currently, the US, France, Britain and Canada are bombing Libya for the same two reasons.

    Comment by rehmat1 | June 18, 2011

  20. Rehmat,

Your basis for the statement that “it was for oil” seems to amount to only “It is the major source of oil supply to Europe”. In other words your argument is based purely on conjecture.

In fact there is no benefit to reliable oil supply that accrues from invasions or fomenting rebellions, etc… Neo-colonialism has never operated that way. Sellers of commodities are always needing to sell more than their clients need to buy due to the fact that oil is fungible and the world is basically awash in the stuff. Iraq and Libya share an absolute dependence on the proceeds of oil sales for the ongoing operations of their states.
